How to choose a laminate flooring matching your home interior

Laminate floor is relatively low-cost and enduring type of floor. It can imitate almost every other type of flooring in style, pattern and appearance – hardwood, tiled and others. Here you can learn how to choose a laminate flooring matching your home interior. You should not only try to match the pattern and colour of your room’s décor. You need to consider the environment and temperature of the room where your laminate floor will be installed. Take a look at the main thing you should pay attention to when choosing the proper laminate flooring for your home.

Laminate floor is installed without glue and is very low-maintenance. It is very easy for cleaning and maintaining. During installation four or five layers of laminate are integrated and fused under pressure and create the planks. The most significant layers in laminate are fibreboard core, which has high thickness and the wear layer, which is coated with very solid aluminium oxide. The latter protects the floor from stains and scratches. The laminate can resemble real wood, stone or ceramic tiles. This makes laminate flooring look very authentic.

First you should regard the climate of the room where you plan to install laminate flooring. You should pay attention to the moisture and temperature which is maintained in the room. Installation of laminate flooring is not appropriate to be done in the bathroom. Although laminate is durable it is not enough resistant to so much moisture and wet, which is created in every bathroom.

Next you should choose what type of floor you will cover with laminate. This material is very universal and it can be used over all types of floors except real wood on concrete. If you plan covering an older floor choose carefully the proper laminate for the sub-floor. If you cover hardwood you should get at least 7 mm thick laminate over it. The reason for this is the fact the wood will contract and enlarge with the change of the temperature in the room. So the main rule is you should install thick laminate to ensure that your floor doesn’t damage easily.

It is very important to match the laminate type you choose to the traffic area in which you use it. Places like hallways near doorsteps will need more resistant laminate because they are high traffic areas. Take special safety measures in rooms like kitchens and bathroom where gets humid and wet. When you choose the texture and colouring of your laminate flooring, pay attention to the interior design and décor in the room. They should be matched.

Laminate looks like real wood but it is much cheaper. The wood grains of both are very similar and together with the texture, laminate floor looks very realistic. It creates very warm atmosphere with less need of special maintenance or cleaning. The joints of the laminate planks are almost invisible. This material can have warranty to thirty years.

When you choose a coating for your laminate, try to accomplish resemblance and balance with the design and decorating of the room. Lighter coloured finish will make the room seem larger, while darker colour tones make warm and intimate atmosphere. If your room is well lighted with plenty of natural light, you can install darker laminate floor to create balance. If the furniture in the room in which you plan to install laminate flooring is heavy in appearance, use lighter hues of laminate.

When choosing the laminate flooring you plan to install you should take into consideration many factors. The colour, pattern and style of the laminate should match the design and decorating of the room. Laminate floors are easy for cleaning and maintenance and are the perfect choice for most homes.

General Cleaning
Usually, laminate is not prone to scratches. However, you should avoid sweeping your laminate floor with broom. For everyday cleaning, you can either use a dry dust mop or a vacuum cleaner. If you decide to vacuum the laminate, use an attachment with soft bristles that will not damage the surface. It’s important to sweep in the same direction that the tiles were installed. Try to collect as much debris and particles you can to avoid the mess later when you wipe with the wet mop.

Urgent Actions
Spills are not unusual for the cooking area. Don’t let standing water or any kind of liquid to sit on the floor for a long time. It can leave a nasty stain or harm the laminate’s protective layer. Soak up any excess of liquid with a clean sponge or cloth. You can also use the mop, but it might not be as effective as absorbing it directly. Furthermore, if it’s not well dried up, it can leave streaks.

Deep Cleaning
As mentioned earlier, too much water can have negative effect on your laminate flooring. When you deep clean the floor, you need to use as less liquid as possible. You can do just as good even without a specific laminate cleaner. Pick a product that will meet your budget and floor type requirements. Using too much soap might leave a residue and will dull the finish of the material. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on expensive cleaning solution, you can try vinegar.

Make It Shine!
If you use minimal amount of liquid, you can let the floor air dry. If this is not the case, you should buff it with a clean microfibre cloth or a dry mop. Don’t consider it as an extra work. It will actually add a shiny finish.

Laminate Floor Renovation Tips

Laminate-Floor-Renovation-Tips

Laminate floor are wonderful and a great solution for homes, but they require a bit of work to complete. This article and its tips will give you some organization ideas you can use to work on just that.

Cleaning laminate floors will be significantly easier than dealing with carpet cleaning or other aspects of house cleaning.
Begin your work with the first step:

  • Prying up the shoe molding
If the room has a shoe molding running all along the baseboard, you will need to remove it to work on the floor. You can still leave the baseboard molding in place however, so there is no need to remove it. Pry the she molding up with a thin pry bar, making sure you’re careful while doing it. You will need to replace it after you install the plastic laminate floor. The shoe molding will cover about a 3/8 inch expansion between the laminate planks and the baseboard. Nailing the shoe back into place, you should ensure you nail it to the baseboard and not the flooring.
  • Undercutting the casing
There is a way to ensure you have the flooring fitting neatly around doorways, so you will need to undercut and trim the door casing and side jambs so you can slip the flooring underneath. Put a piece of rubber underlayment in front of the casing and use a piece of laminate flooring on top. This will allow you to see exactly how high you will need to cut. You will need to use a handsaw, reciprocating saw or even a oscillating multitool to cut the top of the flooring scrap and the casing. You can repeat that with the rest of the side jambs and casings. Once you’re done, you will need to vacuum the debris and dust to complete this step, cleaning everything you’ve been working with.
  • Preparing the subfloor
You will need to work on it for the underlayment by nailing any protruding nail heads. Walk around the room and do your best to hear if there is any creaking going on. If you have any, then you will need to use two inch drywall screws through the subfloor on each of the noisy spots. Do your best to drive the screws into areas with joints for optimal results.
  • Underlayment
The rubber underlayment will help form a moisture barrier and cushioning layer under the laminate floor, also helping to deaden the sounds of movement on it. There are several types of underlayment available out there, so you will need to make sure you work with the one recommended by the flooring manufacturer itself. It usually comes in 3 to 5 foot rolls of different length. Roll out the underlayment all the way from wall to all and use a utility knife to trim it. Roll out and cut lengths, then put it against the first piece of the underlayment, but avoid overlapping the edges. You really don’t need to staple or tape the underlayment to the subfloor itself, you can just apply masking tape across the seams to prevent the underlayment pieces from shifting.
